The collection contains typescript mimeographed annual reports (1903-30); monthly operating reports showing expenses and revenues (1906-27); and completed forms for the telegraph register of trains (ca. 1908-15) and the dispatcher's record of movement of trains (1923-24). For a later period (1960-66) the collection includes income statements and carload business reports.

The Central Indiana Railway Company had its origins as the Anderson, Lebanon and St. Louis Railroad, chartered in 1875. It was sold and reorganized as the Cleveland, Indiana and St. Louis Railway in 1882, and then reorganized as the Midland Railway Company in 1885. A Chicago attorney, Henry Crawford acquired control of the line in 1891 and organized it as the Chicago and South Eastern Railway.
